Chronology
A visit to Ghana in March 2005 by the Chairman of GIP ESTHER, Mr. Bernard Kouchner, resulted in the signature of a partnership agreement by the French and Ghanaian Ministers of Health in June 2005. Exploratory missions in collaboration with the health authorities have made it possible to identify Ghanaian partners and to analyse the situation in order to set up a project in Kumasi in the heart of the Ashanti region.
ESTHER action in Ghana took hold at CHU Kumasi through a project that began in August 2006. It is the only French "health" project in the country since the health sector in terms of bilateral cooperation is notably covered by the United Kingdom, Denmark, Holland and the United States.
From this base in the second university hospital in the country, ESTHER is contributing to the strategy of the health authorities in the implementation of their strategic plan particularly in aspects linked to medical and psychosocial care in the Ashanti region, the second most populated area and crossroads region. Prolongation of the activities signed in 2006 was carried out by the launching of a new project in September 2008 with CHU Kumasi which included a district hospital in Mampong.
ESTHER contributed to the treatment and care of the KATH cohort: 8,115 adult PLWHA including 3,730 receiving ARV therapy and 598 children including 218 receiving ARV therapy (September 2008).
The agreement for Year 1 terminated in December 2007. 2008 was devoted to the creation of two new projects: a hospital project launched at the end of September 2008 and an association agreement signed in November 2008.
